Montpellier II Joint Congress on Evolutionary Biology

This tour will reveal 1000 years of history of the city of Montpellier. It will lead you to the main squares of Montpellier (place de la Comédie, de la Canourgue, du Peyrou) through a labyrinth of narrow medieval streets. You will discover some of the secrets of Montpellier by entering a 17th century mansion house, visiting the Mikwe (12th century ritual Jewish bath) and enjoying the view from the roof of the Arc de Triomphe.

The Medical School

Montpellier has the oldest medical school (Faculté de Médecine) in the western world that continues to function to the present day. During this visit, you will discover the historical building of the Faculté de Médecine. Founded in the 14th century, it has successively been a benedictin monastery, the episcopal palace and finally the school of health. The guide will take you to an exceptional place: the famous anatomy conservatory with its collection of display windows describing the human body in the manner of a curiosity cabinet from the 19th century. You will also discover the Delmas-Orfila-Rouvière room, inaugurated in 2015, which contains the very peculiar anatomical collection of the travelling Spitzner museum.

Warning: some may find some of the content disturbing; this visit is not allowed to people under 12 years.

Secrets of the botanical garden

Montpellier “Jardin des Plantes” is the oldest botanical garden in France, created in 1593 by Richer de Belleval. It is today a haven of peace and a green island in the centre of Montpellier. It houses open-air and greenhouse plant collections, centuries-old trees as well as a rich sculpted heritage. You will discover the “Richer de Belleval” monument, the Rabelais monument, the School of Systematics and the Martins greenhouse.
