The weather is hot and dry in August in Montpellier, with an average maximal temperature of 28°C and average minimal temperature of 18°C, an average precipitation of 30 mm and less than 7 days of rainfall in the month. Heatwaves are common with temperatures over 35°C, with maximal recorded temperatures of almost 40°C. The convention center will have air-conditioning, but always drink sufficiently and carry a hat with you when you go outside. There will be water fountains at your disposal in the Corum, remember to fill up your bottle when you get out. Air conditioning is not very common in private houses and flats in Montpellier. If you have rented a place without air conditioning, think of opening all windows at night and early morning, and shut down everything, including the window shutters, during day time. Most local people just avoid being outside during the hottest hours in the middle of the day. Enjoy the shade of the large trees on the Esplanade! Thunderstorms in the late afternoon can also occur in August after very hot days, and can be quite impressive, so bring an umbrella with you anyway.

Montpellier is lively city with a very young population and a lot of night life. It is relatively safe but be aware that you may encounter intoxicated people with bizarre behavior from time to time. Do not hesitate to call the Police or ask for help if you feel unsafe. Pickpockets are common, as they are in many touristy places. The tram vending machines are popular places in this regard. Use your good sense and some caution.
